This month we are going to briefly talk about two kinds of drywall, traditional drywall, and paperless drywall. What is the difference between them and where can each type be used in the home?

First of all, let us consider the most common type of drywall. Standard drywall is comprised of a gypsum core that is then covered in extremely thick paper. While this type of drywall is easy to work with, readily available, and provides a nice smooth finish, its composition makes it susceptible to water damage and the various problems that come from it such as mold growth.

Paperless drywall, on the other hand, is made of a water-resistant gypsum core which is covered in fiberglass instead of paper. As you can imagine, this makes the drywall very strong and much more resistant to water damage. The added strength of the fiberglass covering, however, also makes it harder to install. It can also require a lot more effort to obtain a smooth finish. Another issue is that paperless drywall is not as easy to come by as a traditional kind.

So, which drywall type should you use for your home? Because it is more water-resistant, paperless drywall is a good choice for areas with high levels of humidity like the bathroom and basements, etc. Traditional drywall may be a good option for other areas of the home where you want an easy to obtain smooth finish and that are not as prone to damp. As we have also mentioned, traditional drywall is also much more readily available than paperless drywall, so this is another thing to think about and research when deciding which kind of drywall to use.
