When moisture starts to get into a home it can cause all kinds of problems ranging from poor indoor air quality to very expensive repairs, the problem could even reduce the home’s value. This is especially the case if the problem has been going on unnoticed for some time. One way to help avoid a moisture intrusion problem is to be aware of the areas where this will most likely happen. Here are some of those areas:

Roofs are one of the most at-risk areas for water leaks. Flashings that have not been installed properly and damaged shingles, etc. will all create the potential for moisture intrusion. Gutters and downspouts can also become trouble spots if they are not cleaned out regularly, this is because clogged gutters prevent water from draining adequately. It is also important for the roof itself to have the correct amount of slope so that water drains away properly.

If the home’s plumbing system is not maintained regularly or sustains any type of damage, you could experience some major moisture-related problems. Look out for issues like dripping faucets or pipes, leaking plumbing fixtures, and blocked drains, etc., and fix them immediately, even if it only seems to be a minor issue.

Cracks and holes are likely to develop in the foundations of a house over time which makes it a lot easier for water to enter. Again, the key is to repair these holes or cracks as soon as you notice them.

High humidity levels inside the home are another reason for moisture-related problems. You will probably notice stains starting to appear on walls and ceilings, and areas of the home may begin to smell musty.
