If you have trees closely situated to your home you may be wondering if they will do it any damage. In this blog we are going to look at some of the ways that trees can cause harm to a building, starting with the foundations.

A lot of homeowners are concerned that tree roots can damage the foundations of the home.  This can certainly be the case if cracks already exist in the foundations, as roots will easily make their way into these cracks.

Another problem that can happen is if the roots of the tree grow big enough they may stretch under the foundations of the home causing them to lift.

Trees can damage more than just the foundations of a home.  For example, if tree limbs or branches fall, they could do a lot of damage to the roof or power and communication lines.  Someone could even be injured by them.   There is even more risk of this happening if the tree is very old or dying.

When trees are close to a house this will also allow greater opportunity for insects and rodents to gain access.  Leaves and branches can also accumulate in gutters causing them to block up, if this is not cleared quickly, you could start to see issues with water intrusion.

A tree could also aid the rapid spread of a fire if one was to break out in the home.

Yes, if not well maintained, a tree can create problems for a house.  If you are concerned about whether a tree close to your home is damaging it, please feel free to contact us for more advice.
