In this month’s blog, we are going to look at a few of the features that every front door should have if it is to be a secure one.

Let’s start with the door’s construction. Is it made up of lightweight materials with a hollow core? If it is, then this would make it easy to break through. A secure door should be made of solid materials with a wood or steel core. Maintenance of the door is also very important to regularly check the door and its framework for signs of rotting, cracking, warping, or other indications of deterioration.

Now for the lock. It goes without saying that this is one of the most important features of a secure door. A good quality deadbolt lock is the best option. You might want to use a chain as well but only use one in addition to the deadbolt and never instead of it. Because bump keys are popular with thieves these days, it may be a good idea to use a bump-resistant lock. An additional safety measure would be to install a peephole so that you can check who is at the door before opening it.

Glass paneling is an attractive feature on a front door, but security is a factor here also. The position of the door lock should be as far away from the glass panels as possible so that if the glass were smashed it would still be difficult to reach the lock.

Some front doors are fitted with mails slots. In cases like this, it’s very important that the mail slot has a cage or box surrounding the slot on the inside of the door. If not, someone may be able to access the lock by means of the mail slot.

These are just a few of the features that your front door should have to make it a secure one.
